There is plenty I know
to be true, by doing or teaching,
and plenty more I feel
to be true, by simple absorption,
and reasonable intersection between.
There are particles in the universe –
scientists of repute will tell you –
with no apparent connection in time or space,
no observable lineage, no cellular remembrance, or
vestigial indicators,
that reliably act as twins.
These scientists know it to be
real in the way that matters to them, empirically-bound.
They can’t explain the phenomenon but anticipate
successful observation is the necessary
prerequisite to capture and subsequent
functional application. I think that
unlike the scientists, I don’t need to explain it
to understand it –
why else:
would the phone ring with the name of the person you’re thinking of just then
would a mother always know her child’s whereabouts
would two strangers meet their eyes and instantly know all there is to know
In this, I am able to trust, you
and I are only a lightning bolt’s distance apart.
